Making a planned gift to The SALT Block Foundation is an effective way to positively impact the
continued operations of the resident organizations of the SALT Block for years to come. Your gift can
help the foundation provide continuous infrastructure support for Hickory Museum or Art, Catawba
Science Center, Western Piedmont Symphony, Hickory Choral Society, and Arts Culture Catawba, so they
can focus on their individual missions of providing the programing and educational opportunities that
make our area such a wonderful place to live. In addition, this type of gift may help you reduce or
eliminate certain tax liability.

SALT Block Foundation leadership will be happy to discuss any planned giving option – in confidence and
without obligation. As with any transaction regarding your finances, we encourage you to contact your
personal estate planner, attorney, or other professional financial advisor regarding a potential gift to
The SALT Block Foundation.

BEQUESTS

Making a bequest in your will is one the most straightforward planned giving options. A will is an
essential document, regardless of your age or financial status. A properly executed will ensures that
your property will be distributed according to your wishes. The following are types of bequests:
Specific Bequest: This would direct a specific dollar amount or property to pass to The SALT Block
Foundation.

Percentage Bequest: This designates a percentage of the total value of the estate as a gift to The SALT
Block Foundation.

Residual Bequest: This directs that The SALT Block Foundation receives a remainder of the estate or a
portion of the remainder, after all expenses and other bequests have been made.

NAMING THE SALT BLOCK FOUNDATION AS A BENEFICIARY

If you have a life insurance policy that is no longer needed to provide for dependents, please consider
making The SALT Block Foundation the beneficiary. This gives you the ability to make a significant gift to
The SALT Block Foundation without using any of your estate’s capital. Another option would be to make
The SALT Block Foundation both the beneficiary and owner of a paid-up policy. This may earn you an
immediate tax deduction equal to the policy’s cash value. For further details contact your policy’s issuing
agent.

An easily planned giving option is buying a Certificate of Deposit (CD) at your local bank and naming The
SALT Block Foundation as the beneficiary, payable-on-death (POD). The CD can remain on deposit
earning interest until the holder’s death; at this point The SALT Block Foundation will receive its value. It
is important that the CD automatically rolls over and will maintain the beneficiary designation.

CHARITABLE REMAINDER TRUST

A Charitable Remainder Trust can be an excellent option for anyone who owns appreciated assets (e.g.,
a rental property) and wants to receive income for life. A donor can transfer their assets to the trust,
where it is sold, avoiding capital gains tax. The proceeds are invested, and the donor or other beneficiary
receives payments for a set term or life. At the end of the trust’s life, the remaining principle is a gift to
The SALT Block Foundation.

For further details on a Charitable Remainder Trust consult your attorney or other professional financial
adviser.

CHARITABLE LEAD TRUST

A Charitable Lead Trust is the opposite of the Charitable Remainder Trust. In this case the donor agrees
to give an asset to The SALT Block Foundation for a set number of years. A Charitable Lead Trust can be
set up during your lifetime or through your estate plans. While the trust will not provide you with an
immediate income tax deduction, you can exclude the trust’s income from your own income, thereby
reducing your taxes. A Charitable Lead Trust may make sense for donors who exceed the annual limits
on income tax deduction for charitable gifts.

For further details regarding a Charitable Lead Trust, please consult your attorney or other professional
financial adviser.

GIFTS OF PROPERTY/REAL ESTATE

Gifts of appreciated property can be given to The SALT Block Foundation through a donor’s will or living
trust. Please consult with SALT Block Foundation leadership prior to making this type of bequest and of
course consult an attorney or other professional financial advisor.
